Opening a Bank Account in Hong Kong

Requirements differ by bank

Under Hong Kong’s anti-money-laundering rules, banks must carry out customer due diligence, and some also follow requirements set by their head office or overseas regulators. Document checklists therefore vary between banks, so it helps to check more than one before deciding.

Address proof is not always mandatory

Regulatory guidance requires banks to collect address information, but verifying that address with documentary proof is left to each bank’s own or group policy; banks should explain the reason whenever extra verification is requested.

What to prepare beforehand

Confirm which identity documents your chosen bank accepts, whether online pre-booking or account opening is available, and bring supporting material such as an enrolment letter to reduce the number of branch visits needed.
