Octopus and Everyday Commuting Basics

Octopus covers most public transport and everyday spending in Hong Kong, so getting a card on arrival day makes the MTR, buses, and convenience stores usable right away.

Octopus and Everyday Commuting Basics

What Octopus is

Launched in September 1997, Octopus is a contactless smart card system jointly developed by Hong Kong’s major public transport operators.

Where it works

Octopus is accepted on most transport services in Hong Kong, including railways, buses, minibuses, coaches, and ferries, so it covers nearly all everyday commuting needs on a single card.

Getting set up on arrival day

Cards can be bought or topped up at the airport, MTR stations, and major convenience stores. Getting one soon after landing makes it easy to travel straight to your accommodation.
