Studying in Hong Kong: How the 8 Universities Fare in the Times Higher Education 2027 Rankings
All eight of Hong Kong's publicly funded universities appear in the THE World University Rankings 2027, five of them in the global top 100. Here is what changed and how to use rankings sensibly when choosing a programme.
If you are planning to study in Hong Kong, the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, released on 30 September 2026, are worth a look. This year’s table covers 2,297 universities in 118 countries and regions. Every one of Hong Kong’s eight funded universities is ranked, five sit inside the global top 100, and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) remains the city’s highest-placed institution at 33rd.
The results at a glance
The top three are stable, while CityUHK, PolyU, HKBU and Lingnan all climbed. Asia as a whole moved up too: Tsinghua reached 11th, and for the first time three Asian universities made the top 15.
Why THE and QS disagree
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published in June, HKU placed 11th and CUHK jumped from 32nd to 18th — the first time two Hong Kong universities were in the QS top 20 together. The gap with THE comes down to method: QS leans heavily on academic and employer reputation, while THE puts more weight on teaching environment, research quality and citations. Treat each table as one input, not a final verdict.
What matters beyond the overall rank
Subject rankings and programme design usually matter more than the overall number for a taught master’s. Check programme length, internship options and class size. - Use rankings to group, not to sort. Put target schools into reach, match and safe tiers by ranking band, then compare within each tier by subject fit.
