QS Asia University Rankings 2027: HKU Stays No. 1 as Five Hong Kong Universities Make the Top 10
QS Asia University Rankings 2027 (released 3 Nov 2026): HKU first again, CityUHK 4th, CUHK 5th, PolyU and HKUST joint 9th. Year-on-year table, methodology explained and tips for choosing a Hong Kong master's.

Hong Kong’s universities have had another strong showing in Asia. The QS Asia University Rankings 2027, published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on 3 November 2026, place the University of Hong Kong (HKU) first in Asia for the second year running, with five Hong Kong institutions in the regional top ten – more than any other higher education system. Although the list came out in 2026, QS names each edition after the following year, so this is the edition most relevant to students applying for 2027 entry. More than 1,700 institutions across Asia were ranked.
How Hong Kong’s eight public universities performed
HKU held first place. City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) climbed from 7th to 4th, entering Asia’s top five for the first time, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) rose from joint 7th to 5th. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) share 9th place; PolyU moved up one spot while HKUST slipped from 6th.

Further down the table, Hong Kong Baptist University reached 50th, The Education University of Hong Kong rose 30 places to 122nd, and Lingnan University gained 36 places to 145th. All eight UGC-funded universities now sit inside Asia’s top 150, and only HKUST fell compared with last year.
What the QS Asia ranking measures
The Asia edition uses a different mix of indicators from the QS World University Rankings. According to QS’s published methodology, it combines 11 measures: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty/student ratio, international research network and citations per paper (10% each), papers per faculty and staff with a PhD (5% each), plus international faculty, international students, inbound exchange and outbound exchange (2.5% each).
Employer reputation and internationalisation therefore carry real weight. If you plan to work in Hong Kong or mainland China after graduating, the employer reputation score may tell you more than the overall position. CityUHK, for example, reports that it ranks first in Asia for staff with a PhD, international faculty and outbound exchange students, which helps explain its jump this year.
Using rankings to choose a Hong Kong master’s programme
Rankings are a starting point, not a verdict. Different league tables weigh different things, and the order of Hong Kong universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 is not identical to the QS Asia list.
A practical approach is to use overall rankings to sort universities into ambitious, target and safer choices, then check subject rankings and the actual curriculum of each programme, and finally weigh tuition, programme length, internships and graduate destinations. Higher-ranked universities generally attract more applicants, so your grades and English scores should match the level you are aiming for.
HK VirtueLead Tips
- Look beyond the headline rank: strengths vary widely between faculties, so compare QS subject rankings and programme pages for business, engineering, education or media.
- Fast risers may get more competitive: CityUHK, HKBU, EdUHK and Lingnan all improved noticeably this year, and popular programmes for 2027 entry may see more applications. Aim to submit before the first-round deadline.
- Plan English tests early: most taught master’s programmes set minimum IELTS or TOEFL scores, and some add sub-score requirements. See our comparison of IELTS and TOEFL requirements for Hong Kong master’s programmes.
What comes next
The main application season for September 2027 entry is under way, and many popular programmes admit in rounds, so earlier applications usually face more open places. Our guide to 2027 Hong Kong master’s application deadlines summarises key dates; always confirm on each programme’s official page. Once you hold an offer, leave time for the student visa application.
